A city on the water

Venice is built on more than a hundred small islands, in the heart of a lagoon of the Adriatic. Seen from above, the city takes the shape of a fish, crossed by the Grand Canal and linked to the mainland by a long bridge.

The lagoon, a landscape on the move

Around the city, the lagoon mixes channels, sandbanks, marshes and islands such as Murano, Burano or Torcello. Long narrow islands, like the Lido, separate it from the sea. From space, the shades of the water, from turquoise to brown, tell the story of currents and sediments.

A World Heritage site

Venice and its lagoon have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
